families win: APS Board approves resolution!

Families, students, and teachers have been working on the Resolution to keep Aurora Public Schools a safe and inclusive community since January engaging with Superintendent Rico Munn and APS School Board Members.

Over 100 community members attended the Aurora Public Schools Board Meeting on May 2 encouraging the board to move forward with a community-led resolution to Keep APS a Safe and Inclusive School Community. Ten community members, including parents, students, and teachers shared their testimonies on why it was so important to pass this Resolution. This show of support sent a powerful message to board members and district officials. They decided to move the resolution forward in the process leading to a vote.

On May 16, families, students, teachers and community members headed to the Aurora Public Schools Board Meeting for a second time in support of the resolution to Keep APS a Safe and Inclusive School Community. Six community members shared passionate testimony outlining their support to board members. The Board then discussed the resolution and outlined the edits they desired which included changing the title of the resolution. With these edits, there was a motion to move the resolution to action which required a unanimous vote in order to be approved. All seven board members voted to approve the resolution at that time!

We're incredibly proud of students and families who organized for months to see the resolution all the way through. They collected over 800 signatures from the Aurora community in support of the resolution and got 32 local and state-wide organizations signed on to the letter of support. AMAZING! At every board meeting over 100 community members came out in support of students, families, and the resolution. This is the first community-led and written resolution in support of student safety regardless of documentation status to be approved in the U.S. Families in Aurora made history and we couldn't be prouder of them!
